Gold Coast Suns vs Richmond Tigers

The Damien Hardwick era at the Suns can get off to a shiny start with the Gold Coast making it four consecutive wins against his former club the Richmond Tigers.

The three-time premiership winning coach brings a lot of expectation to the glitter strip and has set the mark high for the Suns this season, that they will make it into the top eight for the first time in the club’s history.

The Suns have matched up well against the Tigers over the last three seasons and will continue that trend in 2024. The Tigers are missing some key guys as Dustin Martin is now heavily in doubt with a calf injury after defender Jack Graham was ruled out with a quad injury.

I expect the Suns to get out of the blocks quickly and make their dominance felt early in this contest and will score over 21.5 points in the first quarter. The Gold coast will then play a more controlled brand of footy the Hardwick way and will beat the Tigers by a margin of 1-39.

  • The Gold Coast have beaten Richmond by a margin of 1-39 in the previous 3 meetings.
  • 9 of 13 Richmond losses were by a margin of 1-39.
  • The Suns kicked 25 points or more in the first quarter of their final 3 games of last season.

Head to Head

The Suns have thrived in their contests against the Tigers over the past three seasons winning all three matches, which included two games at Marvel and one at Heritage.

Last year’s match saw the inaccuracy of the Tigers kicking 6.12 compared to the Gold Coast’s 11.6 with the Suns running away with the match 72-48.

Gold Coast Form

The Suns were good in patches last season, however, they dropped off the pace immensely at the end of the year, winning just 3 of their final 10 games.

With new coach Damien Hardwick at the helm there is plenty of hopes that the Gold Coast Suns will be pushing for a finals berth in 2024, however, a 105-61 drubbing by the GWS in the Community Series proved that they still have a long way to go and will be a work in progress throughout the season.

Gold Coast Team News

Connor Budarick has really made his mark in defense, just doing what he needed to outdo Bodhi Uwland.

Tom Berry seems to be holding his own up front as a little pressure forward and will likely join Nick Holman and Darcy Macpherson.

Mac Andrew's been solid in defence, but he mixed things up by playing up near the goal against Greater Western Sydney and will be interesting to see where Damien Hardwick plays him in round 1.

Richmond Form

Richmond began their life after the new Suns coach Damien Hardwick mid-way through last season and despite turning things around for a little while there, the Tigers crumbled away at the end of the season losing four of their last five matches and finishing 13th on the ladder.

Their preseason was pretty rough on them as well, losing defender Jack Graham at the end of their 30-point loss to Collingwood in the Community Series.

Richmond Team News

Dustin Martin will be a gameday decision after suffering a calf cork at training during the week.

Toby Nnkervis has been ruled out with a foot injury, while Nick Vlastuin should play besides missing practice. Jack Graham will miss the match with a quad injury and Thomson Dow will replace him.

Steely Green and Seth Campbell are possible debutants for the Tigers.
