For much of the fourth Test it looked like we’d go into a decider at The Oval, but rain ensured that didn’t happen. However, England are certainly on top in the series at the moment and will want to level it at the very least.
I’m backing England to win.
- England have won 12 of their last 17 Test matches.
- England’s Zak Crawley scored 189 runs in the last Test match.
- Australia lead the series 2-1.
- Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne scored 50+ runs in his last 2 innings.
- Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne scored 111 runs in his last innings.
Head to Head
With four Test matches played in the series Australia currently hold a 2-1 lead. The fourth Test ended in a draw.
England Form
England went into the fourth Test with confidence after pulling it back to 2-1 in the third Test. Unfortunately, with the last two days of the fourth Test spoiled by rain, the match ended in a draw, which means regardless of what happens at The Oval, Australia will retain The Ashes.
The hosts sent Australia in to bat on day one in the last Test, a decision that proved to be a good one. Australia were all out for 317 runs before England piled on a massive 592 runs. Zak Crawley scored 189, Joe Root 84 and Jonny Bairstow 99*.
That sent England up nicely with more than three days still to play. But the rain came and only allowed the hosts to bowl another 71 overs where they managed five wickets.
The drawn match was catastrophic for England as victory would have leveled the series and sent it into a decider.
England Injuries & Team News
England may opt for the same side that played so well in the last Test.
Australia Form
Australia have secured the Ashes before the final Test is played. They were fortunate that rain ensured a draw in the last Test which means regardless of the result in the fifth Test, they will retain the urn.
Batting first at Old Trafford, the Aussies scored 317 runs with Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh scoring 51 runs each. The bowlers, however, struggled as England smashed their way to 592 at five and a half to the over.
With plenty of rain forecast for the final two days Australia just needed to keep their heads. In the end, they had to hold out for 72 overs where they only lost five wickets.
The hero of the innings was Labuschagne who scored 111 runs before being dismissed. When the heavens opened for the final time, Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green were at the crease, still 61 runs short of making England bat again.
Australia Injuries & Team News
With the Ashes secured Australia are very likely to make changes to their bowling department. All the bowlers struggled in the last test and may need some rest. David Warner’s poor form also continues, but whether they will drop him now remains to be seen.
Verdict
I am backing England to win with Zak Crawley tipped to top score for the hosts.
Marnus Labuschagne is set to top score for Australia after his superb performance in the fourth Test.
