Australia vs New Zealand Women 1st T20I Preview

After a successful series against Sri Lanka, New Zealand now set their sights on the best team in the world in Australia for a three-match T20I series that starts on Friday in Auckland. This will be part of a double-header that also includes the men’s series against Pakistan.

New Zealand are coming off a solid series against Sri Lanka, where rain scuppered their chances of a series win in the final match. However, New Zealand were disciplined right through that series apart from one bad innings.

Several of Australia’s players are coming off a long WPL in India, including Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Annabel Sutherland and Phoebe Litchfield.

Australia Form

Australia beat England 16-0 in the women’s Ashes series, which is part of a multi-series format. Australia will take plenty of confidence and form away from that result but they will be aware of New Zealand’s pedigree after they won the T20 World Cup in the UAE.

"We were really disappointed with how the T20 World Cup ended for us, and New Zealand did extremely well to win that World Cup," chief selector Shawn Flegler said. "It's a great chance for us to go up against them. There's always a great rivalry against New Zealand and I'm sure they'll be keen to play well against us.

Alyssa Healy is still injured, which means she will not be part of this series. Beth Mooney will take the gloves. Australia will be led by Tahlia McGrath for this T20I series.

New Zealand Form

New Zealand are coming off a 1-1 series draw against Sri Lanka. That series had a different look to it, with several players missing. Still, some of New Zealand’s younger players performed admirably in those conditions. New Zealand will now be pleased with the return of Sophie Devine after her break for mental health.

"To be able to have to process through a few of those things, obviously I'm unfortunately not getting any younger, so they naturally sort of came into mind. But for me, yeah, look, just really excited to be here, just going to be focusing on each day as it comes and just really enjoying every day with the White Ferns,” Devine said.

New Zealand will also have Amelia Kerr back after her stint with the Mumbai Indians. Lea Tahuhu and Bella James are also back for this series.

Verdict

Australia are a powerhouse, in any conditions. While this New Zealand team is strong, Australia are a completely different outfit with their players on song. We expect there to be a challenge from the hosts but we’re backing Australia in this opener.
