Australia had a poor start in the World Cup qualifying third round, a 1-0 loss against Bahrain and 0-0 draw in Indonesia resulting in Graham Arnold’s resignation.

Tony Popovic took over and got off to a winning start, coming back to beat China 3-1 in Adelaide. They drew 1-1 in Japan, going ahead through an own goal but ending with 1-12 shots.

The Socceroos drew both matches in November, 0-0 against Saudi Arabia and 2-2 at Bahrain where Kusini Yengi scored in the 1st and 96th minutes.
