Japan vs Thailand Predictions

An on-form Japan will surely have far too much quality for their Thai opponents on Monday.

I´ll take a chance on the Japanese covering the -2 handicap at the Japan National Stadium.

  • Japan have won by more than 3 goals in 6 of their last 8 matches
  • Japan have scored 4 goals or more in 7 of their last 8 matches
  • Japan have won by more than 3 goals in 4 of their last 5 matches against Thailand

Head to Head

Japan have a 100% winning record in matches played against Thailand in the 21st century. The Samurai Blue claimed a comfortable 4-0 win when these nations last met in 2017.

Thailand have not beaten Japan since a 3-1 victory in a friendly match back in 1997.

Japan Form

Japan made the perfect start to their Asian World Cup qualification campaign in November with back-to-back 5-0 wins against Myanmar and Syria. The Blue Samurai have now won their last eight matches played since June, with 34 goals scored and just five conceded.

Placed 17th in the FIFA World Rankings, Japan have scored impressive victories against Germany (4-1) and Turkey (4-2) in recent months. They have also managed to score at least four goals in seven of their last eight victories.

Japan Team News

Goalkeepers: Daiya Maekawa, Taishi Brandon Nozawa, Zion Suzuki
Defenders: Yukinari Sugawara, Shogo Taniguchi, Ko Itakura, Koki Machida, Seiya Maikuma, Ryoya Morishita, Hiroki Ito, Haruya Fujii, Sota Miura
Midfielders: Takumu Kawamura, Kaishu Sano, Ryotaro Ito, Takumi Minamino, Ritsu Dōan, Keito Nakamura, Junya Itō, Ao Tanaka, Kanji Okunuki
Forwards: Ayase Ueda, Mao Hosoya, Takuma Asano

Japanese head coach Hajime Moriyasu has a 24-man squad to choose from for Monday's friendly against Thailand. Bochum forward Takuma Asano is set to earn his 49th cap; however, Scottish-based forwards Daizen Maeda and Kyogo Furuhashi have not been included in the Japanese selection.

Thailand Form

Thailand kicked off their World Cup qualification campaign with three points from their first two matches played in November. After a disappointing 2-1 home defeat against China, Masatada Ishii's side bounced back with a 3-1 road victory in Singapore.

An inconsistent side ranked outside the world's top 100, the Thais have won six and lost six of their last 15 matches over the past 12 months.

Thailand Team News

Goalkeepers: Siwarak Tedsungnoen, Patiwat Khammai
Defenders: Theerathon Bunmathan (captain), Suphanan Bureerat, Elias Dolah, Suphan Thongsong, Jakkapan Praisuwan, Nicholas Mickelson, Santiphap Channgom
Midfielders: Sarach Yooyen, Bordin Phala, Kritsada Kaman, Supachok Sarachat, Phitiwat Sukjitthammakul, Weerathep Pomphan, Pathompol Charoenrattanapirom, Ekanit Panya, Worachit Kanitsribampen, Picha Autra, Jaroensak Wonggorn, Rungrath Poomchantuek
Forwards: Teerasak Poeiphimai, Yotsakorn Burapha

Masatada Ishii named a trim 22-man selection for Thailand's trip to Japan. The Japanese boss has handed call-ups to five uncapped players, including four goalkeepers.

Experienced forward Teerasil Dangda is a notable absentee from the Thai selection.

Verdict

In preparation for the AFC Asian Cup, I expect Japan to claim an easy win on Monday.

I'm backing the Blue Samurai to cover a -2 handicap against an over-matched Thai side.
