Tondela vs Portimonense Preview, Predictions & Betting Tips

Tondela will be desperate to start scoring goals against Portimonense in their first home game of the 2019/20 Primeira Liga season. Tondela drawn four of their last six matches 0-0 in all competitions, I am backing another low scoring draw against Portimonense at Estádio João Cardoso.

CD Tondela Form & Team News

Tondela have spent the last four seasons battling relegation and the current campaign is heading the same way. Manager Natxo González has taken charge and hasn’t seen his side score in four consecutive games.

Knocked out of the Taça da Liga after a 1-0 defeat against second division side Penafiel, Tondela recorded a 0-0 draw at Vitória Setúbal in their first Primeira Liga match. Jhon Murillo and Jonathan Toro had good chances to score in the first half and substitute Rubilio Castillo hit the post in the dying minutes after Setúbal were reduced to 10 men.

It’s very much a work in progress at Tondela with last season’s top scorer Tomané sold to Red Star Belgrade and a new central defensive duo of Yohan Tavares and Bruno Wilson. Manu Sánchez is the only player injured so Fahd Moufi should continue at right-back.

Tondela can be backed to win at 2.80 with a draw currently priced at 3.40. With goals hard to come by and the defence looking relatively solid, I am backing under 2.5 goals at 1.75.

Portimonense SC Form & Team News

Portimonense were inconsistent last season but were never in serious threat of relegation. Their home form saw them stay up but António Folha’s side will need to do better on the road.

The Algarve club lost 12 of their 15 away matches last season, conceding 35 goals in the process. This season started with two home matches, a 2-0 win against Académica in the Portuguese League Cup and a 0-0 draw against Belenenses in their opening Primeira Liga match.

Paulinho and Aylton Boa Morte scored against Académica, Paulinho taking six shots against Belenenses but unable to beat man of the match goalkeeper Kouakou Koffi. New Brazilian striker Iury had two good chances to score in the second half, a strong header saved and another just wide.

Portimonense have strengthened their squad with some smart signings. Former Porto and Atletico Madrid striker Jackson Martinez joined permanently and compatriot Marlos Moreno was signed on loan from Manchester City.

Martinez is not fully fit with captain and centre-back Lucas Possignolo missing the Belenenses match with an injury. Midfielder Dener also missed the opening match as he makes his way back from injury.

Winger Moreno came off the bench against Belenenses alongside 21-year-old striker Beto who was signed from Clube Olímpico Montijo. They are likely to continue in that role for the time being.

Portimonense are priced at 2.50 to win in Tondela with a draw paying 3.40. Away wins were few and far between last season, can they win their first away match of the season?

Tondela vs Portimonense Head to Head

These clubs have met 10 times with Portimonense holding a 4-3 advantage with three draws. Tondela won this fixture 3-2 last season with the hosts overturning a 2-0 half time deficit.

Portimonense won their home match 3-2 last season with Paulinho, Jackson Martínez and Shoya Nakajima on the score sheet. Xavier and Tomané were on target for Tondela.

Tondela vs Portimonense Match Up

Tondela are really struggling to score but the new central defence is getting protection from Spanish defensive midfielder Pepelu. On loan from Levante, Pepelu could be an important player to help Tondela’s new look defence this season.

Portimonense created few clear cut opportunities to score last week. They have a better squad than Tondela but need to overcome their disappointing away form.

Tondela vs Portimonense Key Statistics

  • Tondela have failed to score in their last 4 matches (all competitions).
  • Tondela have seen under 1.5 goals in 5 of their last 6 matches in all competitions.
  • Tondela have seen 0-0 draws in 4 of their last 6 matches in all competitions.
  • Portimonense have seen under 2.5 goals in 8 of their last 10 matches in all competitions.

Verdict

It’s difficult to see many goals being scored here. Tondela’s attack has been toothless but their defence has been decent, I think a low scoring draw is the most likely outcome.
