Austria vs Serbia Preview

Some of the Serbian players are boycotting national coach Dragan Stojkovic, so their spirits and morale are questionable. They also have lengthy injury list. Austria had great results in late 2024 and I will back them to win in Wien.

HTH

Serbia have a 3-2 advantage against Austria in 5 matches.

They last met in June 2024, a friendly match being won by Austria 2-1.

Austria Form

Austria were close to securing promotion to the UEFA Nations League A last season, ending 2nd in Group C with 11 points (three wins, two draws and one loss), just behind Norway, ahead of Slovenia and Kazakhstan.

Das Team recovered from a 2-1 loss to Norway in September and won their next three matches against Kazakhstan 4-0 & 2-0 and Norway 5-1. Christoph Baumgartner recorded three goals and one assist in these encounters.

Austria’s winning run has ended when they needed points the most, claiming just one point in the final match against Slovenia, conceding late goal.

Serbia Form

After their disappointing run in EURO 2024, Serbia also underperformed in the UEFA Nations League A, claiming just one win in six games to end 3rd behind Spain and Denmark, ahead of Switzerland.

Their only victory was secured in the 3rd round, beating Switzerland 2-0 at home with Aleksandar Mitrovic and Nico Elvedi (own goal) appearing on the scoresheet. They failed to connect though and lost the follow up clash to Spain 3-0.

Dragan Stojkovic’s side wrapped up the campaign with a 1-1 draw against Switzerland in Zurich and a goalless draw against Denmark in Leskovac.

Team News

There are no reported injuries or suspensions for Ralph Rangnick’s side. Stefen Posch and Andreas Weimann were not called up even though they played the last UNL clash against Slovenia. Marko Arnautovic has accumulated 121 appearances and 39 goals for the national team.

The visiting side can’t count on services of injured, Andrija Zivkovic, Strahinja Pavlovic, Filip Terzic and Nikola Milenkovic, while Filip Mladenovic is suspended. Vanja Milikovic-Savic and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic were not called up.

Predicted Starting Lineups

Austria: Schlager, Querfeld, Lienhart, Trauner, Mwene, Grigoritsch, Seiwald. Schmid, Baumgartner, Wimmer, Arnautovic

Serbia: Petrovic, Babic, Mimovic, Erakovic, Topic, N. Maksimovic, Lukic, A. Maksimovic, Samardzic, Vlahovic, Mitrovic

Verdict

According to latest news, there are multiple problems in the Serbian lockerroom, some of the players boycotting coach Dragan Stojkovic. Austria won three of their last four UNL contests, so a home win is the best bet on Thursday.
