The big betting race on ITV on Saturday afternoon is the Ayr Gold Cup. This race boasts a rich history dating back over 200 years, and 24 top sprinters will enter the stalls ahead of Saturday's renewal.

We've taken a look through the ante-post odds and listed some key trends, before picking out two ITV Racing tips.

2021 Ayr Gold Cup Trends

  • 15 of the last 15 winners had run at least 4 times that season
  • 14 of the last 15 winners had run within the last four weeks
  • 13 of the last 15 winners ran at Class 2 level or above last time out (Other 2 both won at Class 3 level)
  • 12 of the last 15 winners aged between 3 and 5
  • 12 of the last 15 winners didn't win last time out
  • 11 of the last 15 winners went off at 10/1 or longer
  • 11 of the last 15 winners had previously won on softer ground
  • 11 of the last 15 winners rated between 98 and 105
  • 11 of the last 15 winners weighted between 8-12 and 9-05
  • 9 of the last 15 winners had run at Listed level or above in their careers
The bottom-weight in each of the last three years has been rated 95, so it's safe to presume that anyone rated south of that mark is highly unlikely to get a run on Saturday. Once they're eliminated, we're left with 42 possible runners.

Soft ground form is usually vital, but the ground at Ayr is current good-to-firm, which puts a spanner in the works. There is, however, plenty of rain forecast on Friday, so the going is going to ease back towards good, maybe even good-to-soft if the weather gods are feeling particularly vengeful.

Great Ambassador is clearly a very progressive sprinter and could be a class above the other runners. Yet, only four horses in the last 40 years have won with more than 9-8 on their backs and Ed Walker's runner offers little value at his current price.

Also, the favourite and second favourite, Commanche Falls have been inconvenienced by the draw. Great Ambassador has been placed in stall one with Commanche Falls one gate inside him in stall two, which could make things more difficult.

2021 Ayr Gold Cup Tips - Fresh

The first runner I was to back is GULLIVER, who finished a length behind Angel Alexander when third in this race two years ago.

Since then, David O'Meara's seven-year-old has won just once, that victory coming in the 2020 renewal of the Sprint Trophy at York. Again, Gulliver has been a regular runner in all of the big handicap sprints this season, with his best performance coming in the Stewards' Cup, where came up just a neck short of Commanche Falls.

Having finished last of the four in the Listed race Great Ambassador won at York, Gulliver then travelled over to the Curragh for Irish Champions Weekend, staying on from the rear to finish fourth in the Bold Lad Sprint Handicap.

Jason Watson's mount is now only rated one pound higher than his last winner mark, and the more rain that falls on Friday, the more Gulliver's chances increase.

2021 Ayr Gold Cup Tips - Snazzy Jazzy

I quite fancy an each-way punt on SNAZZY JAZZY, who's now rated six pounds lower than where he started this season, despite several solid efforts in high-profile races.

On his first start for Lawrence Mullaney, Snazzy Jazzy finished 14th in the Wokingham. He was drawn poorly that day though, and the best finisher on his side of the track was Punchbowl Flyer, who crossed the line eighth.

Snazzy Jazzy then stayed on from the rear to finish fourth behind future Nunthorpe winner, Winter Power in the City Walls Stakes. He then placed sixth under top-weight in the Shergar Cup Sprint and kept on gamely for seventh at the Ebor Festival, where again a slow start proved costly.

Mullaney's six-year-old was only beaten four lengths at York, and the form of that handicap is working out really well. All his best work for Clive Cox came over six and seven furlongs, so stepping back up in trip should definitely suit. Snazzy Jazzy is also unbeaten at Ayr, having won the Ayr Silver Cup on his only previous visit here in 2018.

Verdict

Gulliver and Snazzy Jazzy are our two against the field for this year's Ayr Gold Cup.
