Day two of Chester's May Festival is headlined by the historic Ormonde Stakes. This Group Three is run over a grueling trip of a mile and three-quarters, and the winners often go on to run in either the Hardwicke Stakes or the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot the following month.

Hamish kicked off last season with victory in the Ormonde Stakes, before going on to finish second to Kyprios in the Irish St Leger and win the Cumberland Lodge Stakes. William Haggas' seven-year-old tops the ante-post betting ahead of Aidan O'Brien's Changingoftheguard, who hacked up in the Chester Vase here last season and went on to land the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Andrew Balding's Old Harrovian travels to Chester in search of a hat trick, having scored twice on the all-weather back in April. John and Thady Gosden's Israr will also represent the four-year-old generation and Jim Crowley's mount boasts valuable winning experience on heavy ground.

Iam Williams will be represented by Enemy, who enjoyed a productive winter out in the UAE. Rob Hornby and Ralph Beckett team up with Newbury specialist Max Vega, who ran well when third on his reappearance in the John Porter.

Lone Eagle will also represent Beckett, having finished a seven-length fifth on his stable debut in the John Porter at Newbury. Andrew Slattery's raider, Sunchart completes the field for Thursday's feature.

Having won 15 of the first 21 runnings of the Ormonde Stakes, four-year-olds have only managed to win seven of the last 20 renewals. The three four-year-olds in Thursday's contest are all open to further improvement. Yet, Changingoftheguard has a 328-day absence to overcome, Old Harrovian has never raced at higher than Class 5 level and I'm not convinced that Israr really wants to be going further than a mile-and-a-half.

Hamish was my 6/1 selection when he won this race 12 months ago. William Haggas' charge returns with leading claims once again but, at 15/8, he does look a little short in the market.

At the prices, I'm most tempted by ENEMY, who proved he had a range of gears when winning over 12 furlongs at Meydan back in January. Ian Williams' star then finished a good second in the lucrative Red Sea Turf Handicap in Saudi Arabia, before rounding off the Dubai World Cup carnival with an eighth-place finish in the Dubai Gold Cup.

On his return from Meydan last season, Enemy bolted up in the Queen's Cup on juicy ground at Musselburgh. Although he has proven himself over two miles, Enemy clearly isn't short of speed, so this intermediate trip should be right up his street. Richard Kingscote rode Brown Panther to victory in this race for Tom Dascombe and Michael Owen and he knows the Roodee inside out.
